It’s cozy season, and that has me with one craft on my brain – CROCHET. Scrolling Pinterest a while back, I came across a photo that sparked my curiosity. It was a simple heart crochet pattern, and I thought to myself “I wonder if I could crochet goody bags for my son’s Valentine’s”.
After a few searches, I came across a straightforward pattern for an Easy Crochet Heart by ThreadbareCreations.blogspot.com. I found this was a great starting place for my crochet heart goody bags for my son’s Valentines exchange at preschool.
With plenty of cotton yarn already on hand, I raided my stash for pink, red, and white. Threadbare Creations recommended a 3.75mm crochet hook for a finished heart 2.5″x2″, but knowing that I wanted to place some goodies inside of my heart, I opted for a larger hook, and used a 6.5mm or K hook instead. The other change I made was knowing that I wanted to have ‘goody bags’, for every heart I made, I made a duplicate backside as well. Once I had 30 hearts (10 pink, 10 red, 10 white), using the tails I then slipstitched two hearts together stitching the sides and bottom but leaving the tops open. This allowed me slide a one ounce Play-Doh and a Reese Cup inside the heart goody bag.
To secure the goodies inside, I used a scrap piece of yarn in a different color than the heart to tie the top sides together, added a heart shaped tag made of cardstock paper, and then secured with a double knot.
I love how these turned out! This Valentine DIY is sure to give all the heart eyes whether you’re preschool age or older. These have me itching to start a Valentine banner for our fireplace, next. Tell me, what are you working on?
