Ya’ll. I am giddy writing this. An update to a previous post, Finding a Frugal Halloween, I was actually able to pull off costumes for my family of four for a combined total of $35 instead of the $41 previously mentioned. I LOVE to save a buck, so when I save more than anticipated, I’ll be sure to let you know. I had originally bought 3 skeins of yarn, but actually only needed one. It pays to save receipts, so I returned the two extras as I didn’t see myself using the bright green on any other projects. I also could have saved $1.25 on the roasting pans as I only needed two instead of three. I wanted the costumes to match, so I bought one for my son even though he had a shell of his own. He opted to wear his anyway.
I ended up crocheting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle beanies per the tutorial I found at Repeat Crafter Me. The only adjustment I made here was opting to leave off the mouths as I felt they would cause the eyes to sit too high and not be as visible. Her beanie sizes were ON POINT, and her instructions for adding the felt masks and eyes were easy to follow as well.
For shirts, I knew I needed green, but felt they were missing something. I raided my home craft supplies and found that I had tan acrylic paint so I used this to paint the turtles’ under-shell.
For shells, I drew inspiration from Leap of Faith Crafting’s DIY Fun Family Halloween Costume post, here. We had some extra twine laying around, so after punching 4 holes in each shell, I used this for straps for our shells.
Now, that you know how I did it, how much I spent, and where I gathered supplies, how about a final reveal?
I couldn’t be more proud of how this turned out, so tell me what you think in the comments!
